You know the Adirondack chair. What you may not have known is that the ubiquitous lawn lounger is based on an earlier design like this one—less refined, more rustic—called the Westport chair.

Thomas Lee was bent on comfort when he built the original, back in 1903, and the hallmarks of that vision remain. A deeply pitched seat and slanted back practically demand that you recline, and gratuitously wide arms easily host a good read and a cool drink, not to mention a lazy limb.

This Old House senior technical editor Mark Powers based our version on plans from the Adirondack Museum, in Blue Mountain Lake, New York. Follow along to put together your own piece of history.

Shown: The ingenious joinery actually tightens up when you sit down.

Some gardeners do everything by the books. Others wing it and watch. Rob Proctor is in the latter group, which may explain why his gardening segment on Denver’s NBC local morning news has been running for 10 years now. Twice a week, the former horticulture director of the Denver Botanic Gardens delivers tips that viewers trust because the proof is right there to see: Proctor’s half-acre garden, a true paradise.

Besides using his garden and its needs as a backdrop, Proctor frequently devotes time to answering viewers’ questions. He avoids queries like “How do I keep deer out of my garden?” because saying “Don’t move into deer country” doesn’t really help anyone. Instead, he favors questions for which he can offer useful, time-tested advice. It sometimes runs counter to conventional wisdom. But his philosophy is that truth is in results, not instructions on a package. Read on for his real-world, learned-by-doing insights.

Shown: A wide promenade is what’s left of the half-acre lawn that came with Rob Proctor’s 1905 home. He replaced most of the grass with wide perennial beds overflowing with lush but easy-care plants

Here at This Old House, we love accents with purpose. These decorative metal lanterns with faceted glass panels look charming but also supply subtle illumination. Precursors to electric and gas lights, lanterns guided the way along dim paths and from carriage to front door. Modern versions still have handles for carrying or rings for hanging, as well as designs that echo centuries of use around the world, from Morocco to the English countryside. Some lanterns are meant for indoors or to be taken outside just for the duration of dinner alfresco, but others are built of weather-resistant materials to be left in the elements long-term. Here are 13 glowing options.

If there’s one way to test family dynamics, it’s a whole-house redo—the kind that involves dozens of decisions, from the size of the smallest bedroom to who gets to sleep there. Now imagine not two but six household members, ranging in age and disposition from preschool to retirement. Make one an architect and another an interior designer, and you’ve got some serious discussions in store. Then layer on pressure from the neighbors to keep a sweet little bungalow from putting on airs, and it’s a wonder that the Powers-Kahn house in Jamestown, Rhode Island, got renovated at all, much less in 14 months.

Shown: Arnold and Joanne Kahn flank daughter Dana, son-in-law Donald, dog Ruby, and grandson Nate, 7, on the new front porch. Nate’s baby brother, Theo, and his uncle, Andrew Kahn (not shown), round out the household.
